Skeeter NEWS - Vol. 7 – No. 2 - March 2007

There will be a meeting of the WSC Board of Directors on Saturday afternoon, March 31st starting at approximately 3:30 AFTER THE WORKDAY - SEE IMMEDIATELY BELOW. Members are welcome to attend.
________

ANNOUNCEMENT: Bird Flushing Party and Official 2007 WSC Work Day

There will be an OFFICIAL WSC WORK DAY and BIRD FLUSHING PARTY starting at 9:00 AM at the WSC on Saturday morning, March 31st (with a rain date being the next day, Sunday) at which time we will SCARE the last of our old targets OUT of the trailer and INTO the three trap houses and do a general spring cleanup. Two purposes will be accomplished by moving the old birds: first, we'll be sure to use the oldest birds first and the finally, the unloading of the trailer on April 14th will be MUCH EASIER. John U. has 14 pallets of bran-spanking-new targets coming so we'll be filled to the gills and ready for a busy spring and summer of breaking clay.
To encourage participation, a complete cooked-to-order breakfast will be served starting at 8:00 AM on March 31st (or the next day if it rains Saturday)...eggs, real home fries, bacon or pork roll, grits (for the southern folks), toast (thanks to Decolator's toaster) and coffee will be available to the active bird-flushers and cleaner-uppers...EVERYBODY is encouraged to attend and even if you CAN'T help carry birds a few feet from a pickup truck into the center traphouse (where most of the birds will live until their demise) we'll find another job for you...the old timers who appear will propably be issued bull-whips with which they can offer encouragement to slackers along with yelling appropriate orders and directions.
AFTER breakfast, we'll flush the birds, trucking and stacking them neatly and gently in the three trap houses. The more members (and friends) that show up to help, the easier the job will be...shooter's wives and strong future shooters are invited to help too but if a kid needs minute to minute supervision, leave him home.
NOTE: One of our illustrious Directors writes: "Bill, what are you serving for breakfast? I would like to know before I commit to a work party. What if I want a special meal?" Anonymous
RESPONSE: I'll have the fixin's as noted above, and as I know you're a finicky eater, if you want a special menu and bring your own fixin's, I CAN cook anything.
One of the obvious jobs will be to rake up the tree debris caused by the recent ice storm so if there's room next to your gun case, bring a rake...bring any other tool that you thank will be needed...a chain saw or two will be well used if available.
ADDITIONAL INFO FROM ANOTHER DIRECTOR: If you are entering requests for volunteers, I, [as chairman of] the House Committee, need people to help update the membership board and polish the floors. Work day isn't a good time for the floors until after [the actual work on Work Day is] over...and if anyone has one of those swirley floor machines, bring it so we can really do a good job.
________

The last Range Officer Training that was scheduled was pretty much a bust so Bernie Willis isn't gonna schedule another one until he knows that there's interest. Some of you new members might want to be trained to be a Range Officer...if you do, contact Bernie at the club (he's there most Wednesdays or you can e-mail him at BMWillis6 <AT> msn.com). If you're not already one, volunteer to be a Range Officer...that's how we keep the club open three days a week.

Item FOURTH: WSC Membership Status

There are currently 140 authorized membership positions in the WSC...and as you read this, 135 2007 positions are paid (welcome new member Gerry Hotz, Dave Bittner's brother-in-law) with three additional applications on file (Frank Vasquez is waiting for NJ Firearms Purchaser's ID Card credentials and Richard Kwiazewski and David Downie's brother Chris)...so that leaves only two remaining openings until either a current member resigns, is expelled, or croaks...or fails to pay his dues NEXT FEBRUARY...OR until the Board of Directors authorizes more openings. If you have a friend who wants to join, there ain't much time because we generally observe a first application received, first taken policy. Bill Walton is Membership Chairman. Use his cell 732-757-8324 for more details.
________

Item FIFTH: Condolences

Tom Clark had to put Iggy down last weekend due to cancer.
________

Item SIXTH: MORE illegal ammo

On Saturday, Feb. 24th, the guest of a member was found to be shooting 1300 fps 20 ga. Sporting Clays Winchester AA ammo and Lew Petryk, RO for the day challenged the member and his guest who then stopped using it. THANKS, Lew, for doing a good job as RO! Too fast ammo translates into shot going further than we want it to go and the one thing we DON'T need is having shot fall on neighbor's property. Not only are YOU responsible to follow the rules of the WSC, but if YOU host a guest, it is YOUR responsibility to see that the guest fires ammo that meets OUR requirements...else YOU might find yourself without a place to shoot.
If that sounds like a threat...I assure you that it is! I've been a member of this club for almost thirty years and I don't want the club to be closed because a member chooses not to observe ALL the rules that the Board has set. I don't like it that I can't smoke a cigar in the clubhouse but the Board of Directors sets the rules and those rules govern ALL shooters, members and guests alike. The club won't be closed if someone smokes inside the clubhouse but it may be closed if our neighbors continue to find lead shot in their yards. OPEN CHOKES, SMALL SHOT AND VELOCITIES UNDER 1201 FPS !!!

Skeeter NEWS - Vol. 7 – No. 1 - January 2007

Item FIRST: 2007 Dues are now PAST DUE

At this writing, THIRTY FIVE members have not paid their 2007 Dues as of 1/5/07. We currently allow 140 members and our rolls would be full if all 2006 members pay their 2007 dues. There are three applicants currently on the official Waiting List...each has already paid a $75.00 application fee and is ready to pay the rest and his 2007 dues and take the first spot available.

If you haven't paid your 2007 WSC Dues, you may not use the facilities until your dues are RECEIVED by the Membership Chairman (and he is now in Maine). You must MAIL your dues payment as originally instructed! Dropping payment off at the clubhouse will NOT get the job done.
If you mail your dues to the address given when your dues were solicited in November (100 Cold Indian Spring Road, Ocean, NJ 07712-3717) they'll reach the MC in Maine...by and by...via the forwarding services of the US Postal Service (and we all know how timely they are). To speed things along, you MAY CHOOSE TO mail your dues directly to the MC at his Maine address...28 Snowberry Lane, Orient, ME 04471-4320. The MC keeps in touch with the RO Chairman regularily and by and by your name will again be placed on the list of eligible shooters...if you have a problem with that, you should'a paid your dues by Dec. 31st when they were due.
----
If you have not paid and have decided not to continue your membership but have not notified the Membership Committee, we (and the applicants on the Waiting List) would appreciate a note stating that fact, mailed to either of the addresses above or better, send an e-mail to WaysideSKEETClub@aol.com .
----
On February 16th, any member who's dues have not been RECEIVED by the Membership Chairman (in Maine) will be dropped from the rolls of the WSC and as many applicants on the waiting list as there are openings will be admitted to membership...immediately! If any openings remain after all applicants are admitted, anyone who hasn't paid his dues may pay $175.00 and reactivate his membership...but only as long as openings exist. If the membership rolls close, former members must reapply (as if he had never been a member) and pay the full initiation fee along with dues prorated to the end of the current dues year at the rate of $15.00 per month...and be placed on the Waiting List.
----
If you haven't paid your 2007 dues and wish to continue your membership, SEND THEM NOW! There's still plenty of time before the Feb. 15th cutoff date...and don't forget to enclose the information form showing any missing information along with corrections of any inaccuracies. If your NRA expiration date is highlighted in yellow, we won't accept your dues unless you indicate an appropriate future NRA Membership expiration date.

E-mail reminders were sent Dec. 30th to the unpaids who are online. Several have responded that their dues have been mailed...but you don't get credit until they are RECEIVED and logged by the MC.

If you have dropped your dues check off at the clubhouse, in care of a Range Officer, your dues HAVE NOT BEEN PROPERLY RECEIVED and credited. YOU must see that the dues and the completed information sheet gets into the hands of the Membership Chairman. The treasurer collects and records the general receipts from the Range Officers ONLY OCCASIONALLY and it is not his job to notify the Membership Chairman whether or not he received dues from the Range Officer.
________

Item SECOND: Range Officer Training Date

Mistakenly, the last SkeeterNEWS indicated that the next RO Training would be on Saturday, January 12th but January 12th is not a Saturday. The proper date is Saturday, January 20th...the instruction will start at 1:00. Sign up at the clubhouse.
________

Item THIRD: Wrong Ammo - AGAIN

This is to inform you that on December 30th we had another incident of the wrong size shells being used on the field. The shot from these shells landed on one of our neighbor’s property. The neighbor brought the shot to the club and showed it to some of the shooters that were at the club at that time. When the shot was examined it looked like size 71¦2 or larger. It was discovered that some of the people shooting were using Reloads that had this size shot in them. The thing that made this interesting was that the people shooting the reloaded shells had not reloaded the shells themselves. They had purchased the shells from someone else and did not realize that it was an improper load. They stopped using the shells immediately. The reason that I am informing you about this is to be sure that the proper Ammo is being used, even Reloads. This was an isolated incident, but I think we all should be aware of what happened that day. Even reloads can cause a problem. We all know what happens when the neighbors around a Skeet Field are not happy. More than one field has been forced to close because of unhappy neighbors. So be aware of Ammo being used when you are on duty.
Thanks, Bernie Willis, Chief Range Officer
____
EDITOR'S NOTE: This is the SECOND incident of a MEMBER being caught shooting ILLEGAL ammo at WSC. I've been a member of WSC for more than 35 years and I don't want to see this club closed because a shooter (either a member or a guest) doesn't KNOW what kind of ammo he is shooting...or worse, knows that he's shooting illegal ammo and does so anyway because it's CHEAP or because somebody gave it to him or for some other baloney reason.
The next time I hear of someone shooting ILLEGAL ammo at WSC (either knowingly or "innocently") I'm going to push for the Board of Directors to suspend the membership of that shooter and ban that shooter from any kind of shooting at WSC. It is EVERYONE'S responsibility to know that his gun, choke) and ammo is approved to be shot at WSC. Because of the location of the WSC and because we have harped on the rules, it is inexcusable for a member to use inappropriate ammo at WSC.

The ONLY legal firearms at WSC are 12, 16, 20, 28 ga. and .410 bore shotguns with open (Cylinder, Improved Cylinder, Skeet 1 or Skeet 2) chokes. The ONLY legal ammo is size 8 OR SMALLER shot and loaded NOT TO EXCEED 1200 feet per second. KNOW WHAT YOU ARE SHOOTING and SHOOT ONLY WHAT IS APPROVED!
________

Item FOURTH: Board of Director's Meeting

I believe that the WSC Board of Directors will meet at the clubhouse next Wednesday. I do not know the time of the meeting.

Item FIRST: Permitted/Prohibited Guns and Ammo

The four basic shooting rules of the WSC need to be revisited because non-compliant hulls are still being found on our fields. One of the most important rules is that the SPEED of the shot is LIMITED to 1200 (not 1250 as I mistakenly reported last issue). Standard Skeet loads/shells like the ones that we sell are what is generally recommended and approved. The most common gun shot is 12 ga. and the 12 Ga. box that we sell shows a 2 3/4 Dram Equivalent load pushing 1 1/8 oz. of lead and is standardized at 1145 FPS (feet per second). Also allowed is a HOT load listed on the box as a 3 Dram Equivalent charge pushing 1 1/8 oz of shot at 1200 FPS...although we don't sell that load, its the heaviest and fastest ammo that is allowed at WSC. You should note that a 3 Dram Equivalent load pushing only 1 oz. of shot is actually faster (1235 FPS) and is NOT ALLOWED...if you shoot 1 oz. loads, they must be less than 3 Dram Equiv. It's the responsibility of all shooters to use only approved ammo at WSC. If you purchase other ammo, it's up to you to know/learn what speed is produced and stay under 1200 FPS, no matter what the gauge and components...or use it SOMEPLACE ELSE. Shooters who reload are required to use recipes that produce shot speeds below 1201 FPS. There are no exceptions!
The other three gun and ammo criteria are easier to understand, determine and adhere to:
2) Use no shotgun of larger bore than 12 Ga. There are no exceptions! No rifles, pistols and no BB guns!
3) No choke tighter than Improved Cylinder. Cylinder is allowed; Skeet 1 is allowed; Skeet 2 is allowed and Improved Cylinder is allowed. Modified, Improved Modified, Full and ALL other choke designations are not permitted. There are no exceptions! Shoot your favorite pheasant gun someplace else. There is a go/no-go gauge in the Range Officer's desk for 12, 20, 28 and .410. If you have question about your choke, ask to use the gauge in your gun. If the gauge slides into your muzzle to the proper level, your choke is OK (unless your chokes or tubes are backbored...and you should know about them if they are).
4) No shot size larger than No. 8. ONLY No. 8 and No. 9 shot is permitted. 7 1/2, 7 and larger shot is NOT permitted at WSC.
Failure to adhere to these rules is grounds for termination of membership. Three inch shells in any gauge are NOT permitted.
____

Item SECOND: Coffee Can money

I was at the club on Sunday and I KNOW that we went through at least three pots of coffee and that there were some other goodies available to nibble on and that only THREE dollars were put into the contributions can. Everyone is welcome to partake of the coffee and munchies at the club but EVERYONE who does is EXPECTED to CONTRIBUTE at least $1.00 on the DAY that you do so. That's $1.00 PER PERSON, not per family. If you have a guest and he participates in our hospitality, it's up to him or YOU to feed the kitty PER PERSON. Your Annual Dues do not go toward providing this perk. I hope that's 'enuf said.
____

Item THIRD: Hulls dropped on the Skeet Fields

During Registered Shoots, shooters are NOT PERMITTED to pick up hulls once they hit the ground during their four rounds and ONLY with permission between rounds or after the shooting has been completed. If you are given permission to pick hulls up after all shooting, please pick up ALL hulls, yours and everybody else's...somebody has to do it.
During ALL practice and league shooting (read that to be ALL shooting other than at a Registered Shoot) the shooter is REQUIRED to pick up any hull that he drops or ejects onto the field. If it doesn't bother other shooters, it may be done as you progress from station to station (or better) at the end of each round (or best) when the shooter is finished for the day.
Contrary to prior belief, IT IS NOT THE RESPONSIBILILITY OF THE RANGE OFFICER to pick up discarded hulls. For those who do eject hulls onto the ground, the club has obtained a 'hull-picker-upper' which is located behind the front door of the clubhouse. If anyone wants to use it help yourself...you won't have to bend over.
In addition to any hulls dropped, all members are expected to clean up after themselves both inside and outside the clubhouse...if you dirty a dish or silverware, WASH IT and put it away...that's not the job the ROs volunteer to do.
Finally, if you are one of the last shooters to leave the club and the RO is getting ready to close up, offer to help him...sometimes the job is simple and he'll decline your help, but at other times, after an especially busy day, he has to move birds and clean up...Sundays, garbage has to be moved to the road. The RO's will appreciate your help...after all, if it wasn't for them volunteering, you wouldn't be able to shoot.
That IS 'enuf said.
____

Item FOURTH: New Desk Keys are available for ROs and Officers

Thanks go to Mike Fisco who heard a discussion recently that our RO desk was literally on it's last leg(s) and voluntarily, he brought a replacement desk to the club. Therefore, new RO Desk Keys have been procured and are available to all qualified Range Officers and Club Officers. They are in the (locked) desk (middle left drawer) with a list. If you need and are authorized to receive a new key, get one and check your name off the list. (Thanks Mike, for the desk! Everyone might want to visit the WSC WISH LIST Page on the website for other stuff the club can use. Try: http://www.chiplakenews.org/WSCwish.htm).
____

Item FIFTH: WSC Administration and Operations

The WSC doesn't operate in a vacuum. The elected officers, trustees and committees work hard to allow us all to shoot without much hassle but it's not easy and it doesn't come without work. Some members provide help all the time and without being asked...and some are getting burned out. If you haven't been active with helping run the WSC, find something you are interested in and offer to help. A new leadership is about to take over...Doc Luisi and John Urciuoli will soon be taking the reins from Bernie Mihalko and John Tedesco and they'll appreciate all the help they can get. VOLUNTEER! Volunteer to be on a committee...volunteer to become a Range Officer and DO YOUR PART. The WSC is a valuable asset...don't think that it will continue to go on without YOUR help.
____

Item SIXTH: Snow Removal

The WSC is looking for assistance at the time of snowfalls this winter. The driveway doesn't get plowed by itself and the walkways and shooting pads don't get shoveled by themselves...and it's NOT the responsibility of the volunteer Range Officers.
The club is willing to PAY to have the road and parking lot plowed and is willing to PAY to have someone shovel (or snowblow major falls with our snowblower). Lacking a contract with someone, no one will be able to shoot if someone doesn't shovel the walks, paths and pads...the Board will not allow shooting under unsafe and slippery footing conditions.
If you are interested (or know of someone who is interested) in regularily plowing or shoveling snow, contact an officer or Tom Clark who is the Grounds Committee chairman. If we can't arrange for paid snow removal, in addition to your gun, bring your shovel after a snowfall!
____

Item SEVENTH: Your Guests and Sponsored Applicants

When you act as host for any non-member, his actions are your responsibility. You must instruct him about WSC's rules and policies and it's up to you to see that he adheres to all our rules and procedures. Your spouse and children under age 23 are considered as members but you are still responsible for their actions and payment for anything that they owe the club and don't voluntarily pay for themselves. All others who shoot under your membership are considered to be guests and all guests pay $3.00 per round. Ammo is priced the same for members, family and guests at $6.50 for 12 & 20 ga. and $7.50 for 28 ga. & .410 bore. If they don't pay voluntarily, you will be charged. Guest rounds may NOT be punched on your shoot card.
Whenever someone shoots under your membership, family, guests or sponsored applicants not yet Safety Qualified, you should accompany them on the North Field (unless you are specifically invited to shoot with full members in a squad on the Main Field). If your family (spouse and children under age 23) are themselves individuall Safety Qualified by a WSC Safety Committee person, they may shoot without you accompanying them on any field at any time...all others with you on the North Field, please.
Finally, if you are a new member and are still getting your "skeet bearings" you should plan to shoot on the North Field until you feel "comfortable"...don't hesitate to ask a senior member or officer to shoot with you at any time...and don't hesitate to ask they ANY question about shooting skeet.
Two new members are now in the process of being inducted into membership, Walt Antoniwicz (replacing Jerry Armenio) and Steve Toth (fills John Warhol's spot - Resigned). At least four others are currently on the waiting list and will be inducted upon the resignation or non-payment of dues of current members. If you see a face that you don't recognize, introduce yourself and invite a new member to shoot with you...he'll appreciate your friendliness and hospitality.
____

Item EIGHTH: Range Officer Training Date Set

Bernie Willis has scheduled a date to train volunteers to be new range officers (and retrain old ROs who have forgotten what they're supposed to do. To participate, be at the WSC on Saturday, January 12th at 1:00. We are always looking for new range officers. Even if you are a probationary member, you can be a RO and for each day you serve, get a $15.00 credit for your 2008 dues. Sign-up at the clubhouse so Bernie will know how many to plan for.
